Custom Kitchens North of Colorado Springs

Castle Rock Kitchens provides kitchen remodeling in Monument and the surrounding Tri-Lakes communities, including Palmer Lake, Woodmoor and Gleneagle. Monument grew around the Rio Grande railroad stop that arrived in 1872 and incorporated in 1879 under the name Henry's Station. It sits on the Palmer Divide, the high ground between the Denver and Colorado Springs metro areas, and that position drives several of the decisions below.

Where a house has a view, the view usually decides the layout: which way the sink faces, how much glass the wall can take, and how the island relates to the windows. Settle that first. Cabinetry, lighting and the hood all follow from it.

At Nearly 7,000 Feet, Burners Lose About a Fifth of Their Rating

Monument's published elevation is about 6,982 feet, the highest of the communities on this site. With the National Fuel Gas Code's derate of about 4 percent per 1,000 feet above 2,000, gas input drops close to 20 percent. An 18,000 BTU burner delivers roughly 14,400 BTU. Anyone who sears, wok-cooks or boils large pots will notice that.

So this is the place in our service area where the cooktop deserves the most scrutiny: confirm high-altitude ratings and kits, consider higher-output burners, or pair gas with an induction zone. Water boils near 199°F here according to CSU Extension's figures, so recipes take longer than written, too.

Permits: Town of Monument and the Regional Building Department

Building permits in Monument go through the Town of Monument Planning Department, which works alongside the Pikes Peak Regional Building Department and adopts the Pikes Peak Regional Building Code. Some projects also need a separate PPRBD submittal. Ask the town which applies before scheduling work that moves plumbing, gas, electrical or walls.

Snow, Wildfire History and Several Water Providers

The Palmer Divide catches more snow than the cities on either side. In March 2021 the National Weather Service recorded three to four feet of snow for the month in Monument, Palmer Lake and Black Forest, while the Colorado Springs airport received 14.6 inches. Cabinet and stone deliveries need some slack in the winter schedule.

The 2013 Black Forest Fire, just east of town, burned 486 structures according to El Paso County figures cited by the Rocky Mountain Insurance Information Association. If a remodel includes exterior work such as windows or new vent openings, ask what current requirements apply at that address.

Water service is split. The town's own system draws from wells in Denver Basin aquifers, but parts of Monument are served by other districts such as Triview Metropolitan District and Woodmoor Water and Sanitation. Find out which provider serves the house before choosing filtration or softening equipment for the kitchen.

From Plan to Installation in Monument

A Tri-Lakes kitchen usually starts with layout and ventilation planning, especially when a large range and hood are involved. Cabinetry built to the room comes next, and the remodeling sequence covers protection, rough-in, inspection and installation.

Monument Kitchen Remodeling Questions

How much does altitude affect a gas range in Monument?

A lot. At about 6,982 feet, gas input is derated close to 20 percent under the National Fuel Gas Code, so an 18,000 BTU burner delivers roughly 14,400 BTU. Confirm the range's high-altitude rating and kit before ordering.

Who issues building permits for a kitchen remodel in Monument?

The Town of Monument Planning Department handles building permits, working with the Pikes Peak Regional Building Department. Some projects also need a separate PPRBD submittal; the town can tell you which applies.

Which water provider serves my Monument home?

It depends on the address. The Town of Monument Water Department serves part of town, and other areas are served by districts such as Triview Metropolitan District and Woodmoor Water and Sanitation. The town publishes a list of providers on its resident resources page.
